How to Site a Fire Pit Safely (and Choose the Right Fuel)
Three things decide where a fire pit goes: distance from anything combustible, what it’s standing on, and which way the wind usually blows. Fuel type changes the details — wood throws embers, propane doesn’t — but not the order of those priorities.
Get siting wrong and no amount of care during use compensates. Get it right and most of the rest is straightforward.
Clearance first
Every fire pit has a manufacturer-stated minimum clearance, and that figure is the floor, not the target. It’s determined under specific conditions and your garden is not those conditions.
Measure clearance in three dimensions:
Horizontally, from the pit to fences, sheds, hedges, garden furniture, and the house. Fence panels and hedges are the two most commonly underestimated — both are dry, both are vertical, and a hedge can carry fire along its length surprisingly fast.
Vertically, to anything overhead. Tree canopy, pergolas, awnings, washing lines, cables, and eaves. Overhead clearance gets forgotten because you’re looking at the ground when you place the pit. A gazebo or umbrella above a fire pit is a straightforward fire hazard regardless of the fabric’s rating.

Also worth checking: local rules. Many areas restrict open burning, some require permits, some ban it seasonally during dry periods, and rented or leasehold properties often have their own terms. These differ everywhere and change with conditions, so check locally rather than assuming.
The surface underneath
Stone, brick, concrete, gravel, or bare earth are appropriate. Non-combustible, stable, and they don’t mind heat.
Timber decking is the problem case. Even where a pit is sold as deck-compatible, radiant heat downward can scorch or char boards over time, and composite decking can soften or deform. If a pit must go on a deck, a purpose-made heat shield or fire-pit pad is the minimum, and the deck’s condition wants checking after each use.
Grass will die and can smoulder underneath, particularly when dry. A pit stand or a slab base solves this.
Slopes and soft ground are a stability problem. A pit that can tip is a serious hazard, and soft ground shifts as it dries or gets wet. Level, firm base, always.
Wind
Set the pit where prevailing wind carries smoke away from your seating, your house’s windows, and your neighbours’. This is usually the difference between an enjoyable evening and everyone relocating.
Wind also matters for safety with solid fuel: it carries embers. A windbreak is useful, but a solid one placed too close becomes a combustible object inside the clearance zone, so it needs the same distance treatment as a fence.
Don’t use a fire pit in strong or gusty wind. With wood, ember travel becomes unpredictable. With gas, wind can blow the flame out while fuel continues to flow, which is the more serious failure.
Fuel types, and what changes
Wood. The traditional fire, and the one most people want — real flame, real heat, the smell. It also produces sparks and embers, requires ongoing tending, generates smoke that neighbours may object to, and leaves ash to dispose of. It needs the largest clearance and a spark screen is genuinely worthwhile rather than optional. Burn dry, seasoned wood only: wet or green wood smokes heavily, and treated, painted, or manufactured timber releases harmful compounds and should never go in.
Propane and natural gas. No embers, no smoke, instant control, and the flame goes out when you turn it off. Materially safer on and around decking, and the better choice where smoke would be a nuisance. Less heat output per unit of visual flame than wood, and a fuel supply to manage. Two rules that aren’t optional: never use a propane appliance indoors or in an enclosed space, and any permanent gas connection is a job for a qualified gas professional, not a DIY task. Check hoses and connections for damage before each use, and store cylinders upright, outdoors, away from heat.
Gel and bioethanol. Small, portable, no smoke, no flue needed. The heat output is modest — these are ambiance rather than heating. The critical safety point is that you must never refuel one while it is lit or still hot. Bioethanol ignites readily and the flame can be nearly invisible in daylight, which is exactly the situation in which people pour fuel onto a live fire. Let it cool fully, every time.
During use, and afterwards
- Never leave a lit fire pit unattended, including “just going inside for a minute.”
- Keep a means of extinguishing to hand — a hose, a bucket of water for wood, or an appropriate extinguisher. Water on a grease or fuel fire makes things worse; know which you have.
- Keep children and pets at a defined distance, and make it a visible boundary rather than a verbal instruction.
- Never use petrol, lighter fluid, or any accelerant to start or revive a fire.
- Extinguish completely before leaving. Wood ash retains enough heat to reignite for a long time — spread and douse it rather than leaving a covered pile.
- Dispose of ash in a metal container, outdoors, away from the building, and only once it’s cold.
What to actually do
- Read the manufacturer’s clearance figure, then exceed it.
- Check overhead as carefully as you check around.
- Put it on stone, brick, concrete, or gravel. Treat decking as a special case needing a proper shield.
- Orient it against your prevailing wind, away from seating and windows.
- Check local burning rules and any tenancy or lease terms.
- Match the fuel to the setting: wood for open ground, gas near a house or deck, gel only for ambiance and never refuelled hot.
- Keep extinguishing means within reach, and never walk away from a lit fire.
